Vidhi Manthan 2024: Exploring Bharatiya Gyan Parampara’s Role in Law, Justice, and Curriculum Innovation

The Vidhi Manthan: Bharatiya Gyan Parampara in Law & Justice symposium, held at Symbiosis Law School, Pune, explored the integration of India’s ancient knowledge systems (IKS) into modern legal frameworks and education. The event, part of the Law Day Oath and Justice Y.V. Chandrachud Memorial Public Lecture, 2024, commenced with keynote speeches from esteemed dignitaries, including Hon’ble Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, who emphasized the historical presence of the rule of law in Indian tradition.

Prateik Dhatrak, representing Pravah as the Knowledge Partner, delivered the opening remarks for the symposium. The first plenary session featured insightful discussions on Bharatiya Gyan Parampara’s interpretative frameworks, such as Mimansa and Nyaya, led by Dr. Atmaram Shelke, Dr. Ashutosh Panchbhai, and Prof. Aruna Sampath. Advocate Shravanth Arya Tandra offered a contemporary legal perspective on ancient dispute resolution and property rights.

The second session included critical analyses by Dr. Sneha Sapre on P.V. Kane’s Dharmashastra and Dr. Anagha Joshi on the Shanti Parva and Valmiki Ramayana. Prof. K. Parameswaran and Dr. Sidhartha Sekhar Dash expanded on the intersections of neuro-law, spirituality, and justice, demonstrating the potential of IKS to enrich jurisprudence. Dr. Shashikala Gurpur highlighted how Supreme Court judgments and curriculum development have drawn inspiration from texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Thirukkural.

The symposium concluded with a collaborative vision for integrating ancient Indian wisdom into contemporary legal education, fostering a more holistic understanding of justice, law, and society.
